What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized therapeutic technique designed to support your body’s lymphatic system, the network responsible for clearing waste, reducing inflammation, and keeping your immune function strong.

Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses slow, rhythmic movements with light pressure to stimulate lymph flow, helping your body reduce swelling, speed recovery, and restore a sense of ease in tissues that feel heavy, congested, or inflamed.

This is not a relaxation massage. It is precise, therapeutic work with measurable outcomes.

Because MLD is outcome-focused therapeutic work, we recommend discussing session frequency during your first appointment. Some clients benefit from weekly sessions during an acute recovery phase, while others find monthly maintenance is the right long-term fit.

Who Benefits from Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

MLD is particularly effective for clients managing specific health conditions where the lymphatic system plays a direct role in symptoms and recovery. This is not a general wellness service. It is targeted, outcome-focused work.

Post-Surgical Recovery
After surgery, your body’s lymphatic system is working hard to clear surgical byproducts, reduce localized swelling, and support tissue repair. MLD accelerates this process using techniques that gently guide fluid away from congested areas. Many clients recovering from orthopedic procedures, cosmetic surgery, or abdominal surgery find that MLD significantly reduces their recovery timeline and the heaviness that lingers long after an incision heals.

Lymphedema and Chronic Swelling
Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, causing persistent fluid buildup, most commonly in the arms or legs. MLD is one of the primary clinical interventions for managing lymphedema, helping redirect fluid through healthy lymph pathways and reduce the chronic swelling that interferes with daily function and comfort.

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia creates widespread pain, fatigue, and heightened sensitivity throughout the body. Because MLD works with extremely light pressure, it is one of the few forms of bodywork that clients with fibromyalgia can often tolerate and genuinely benefit from. The technique calms the nervous system, reduces tissue congestion, and supports the kind of gentle circulation that helps ease fibromyalgia’s heaviness without triggering a flare.

Autoimmune Conditions and Chronic Fatigue
When the immune system is dysregulated, the lymphatic system often reflects that stress in the form of swelling, inflammation, tissue congestion, and a persistent sense of being unwell. MLD supports lymphatic clearing, which takes some of the load off an already burdened immune response. Clients managing conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease, and chronic fatigue syndrome often report improved energy, reduced inflammation, and a noticeable decrease in the systemic heaviness that accompanies their condition.

Chronic Inflammation and Sinus Congestion
Recurring sinus pressure, facial congestion, and inflammation that never fully resolves often have a lymphatic component. MLD applied to the head, neck, and face helps open drainage pathways, reducing pressure and congestion that medications alone may not fully address.

General Immune and Recovery Support
Even without a specific diagnosis, MLD can be a valuable tool during periods of illness recovery, high stress, or immune challenge. If your body feels sluggish, heavy, or slow to bounce back, supporting lymphatic flow is a grounded, proactive step.

What to expect during your session

Your session begins with a brief intake conversation so your therapist understands your health history, current symptoms, and goals. From there, the work is methodical and precise, following the natural pathways of your lymphatic system.

Sessions are quiet and deeply calming. Many clients notice a reduction in heaviness or puffiness within the first appointment, with cumulative results that build over a series of sessions.

You will leave with a clear picture of what was addressed and what continued care might look like for your specific situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coverage varies by provider and diagnosis. Clients with a formal lymphedema diagnosis or post-surgical referral are most likely to have some coverage available. We recommend contacting your insurance carrier directly. We are happy to provide documentation of your sessions upon request.

MLD uses very light pressure and is not designed to work muscle tissue. It targets the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin. If you are expecting deep pressure, this is an entirely different experience, and that is intentional. The light touch is what makes it therapeutic.

No referral is required to book a session. However, if you are post-surgical, please consult your physician before scheduling to confirm you have been cleared for manual therapy.

This depends entirely on your condition and goals. Acute post-surgical swelling may resolve with three to six sessions. Chronic conditions like lymphedema or fibromyalgia often benefit from ongoing maintenance care. Ginger will give you an honest recommendation after your first session.

Depending on your health history and goals, MLD may complement other services we offer. Ginger will advise you on the best approach during your intake conversation.
